Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is a natural treatment to restore the skins dermal layers and stimulate hair follicles in the scalp for thinning and loss of hair. This natural treatment is done by using your own platelets in your blood.  A small amount of blood is drawn from the arm and through high powered centrifugation the platelets are extracted and the result is a high concentration of platelets (PRP) which can then be injected into your scalp and/or face. These platelets then activate the production of collagen, elastin and many growth factors that aid in facial rejuvenation and hair follicle stimulation.

It is recommended to do 3-6 treatments 4 weeks apart. Results in 2-6 months and are individualized depending on age, health, autoimmune disease, COVID, hormones, prescription medications and thyroid disease. 75% of good candidates see results after 3 treatments; 25-40% new hair growth and thickening with less hair loss.  PRP can also restore under-eye depletion as well as stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin to restore a more youthful appearance to the face.

What to expect...

Before the treatment, you will typically have a consultation with your healthcare provider. During this consultation, they will assess your medical history and discuss your specific concerns and goals.

PRP therapy begins with a blood draw from your arm, similar to when you have blood drawn for a regular blood test. The amount of blood drawn is typically minimal, usually a few vials.

The drawn blood is then placed in a centrifuge machine. This machine spins the blood at a high speed to separate the components. The PRP, which contains a concentrated amount of platelets and growth factors, is isolated during this process.

Depending on the area being treated and your preference, a topical anesthetic cream may be applied to numb the treatment area. This is more common for treatments around the face, as it can be sensitive.

  • The PRP is then carefully injected or applied to the target area. The method and depth of injection/application vary depending on the purpose of the treatment. For example:

    • In facial PRP treatments, it may be injected into fine lines, wrinkles, or applied topically for skin rejuvenation.

    • In scalp PRP treatments, it may be injected into the scalp to promote hair growth.

    • In under-eye PRP treatments, it may be injected or applied to reduce the appearance of dark circles or improve skin texture.

The entire PRP treatment process usually takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment area and the number of injections.

Pre-care Instructions

  • Avoid Certain Medications: Some medications, like blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may need to be temporarily stopped prior to treatment. Follow your provider's instructions.

  • Ensure you are well-hydrated before the procedure. This can make drawing blood for PRP easier.

  • Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: Avoid alcohol and caffeine consumption for at least 24 hours prior to the procedure, as they can dehydrate your body.

  • Cleanse Your Skin: Make sure your scalp, under-eye area, and face are clean and free from makeup, lotions, or any other products.

  • If you are concerned about discomfort, we can have a discussion whether a topical anesthetic can be applied to numb the treatment area.

Post-care Instructions

  • Follow Post-Treatment Instructions: Chrisy P.A. will give you specific instructions, but generally, you should keep the treated area clean and avoid touching it for at least the first few hours.

  • Protect the treated areas from direct sunlight for a few days. Sunscreen or a wide-brimmed hat is recommended.

  • Skincare Routine: Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup or resuming your regular skincare routine in the treated area. Use gentle, non-irritating products.

  • Some mild swelling and redness may occur, especially around the eyes. This typically subsides within a day or two.

  • If you experience swelling, you can use a cold compress or ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) for short intervals.

  • Haircare: After a scalp PRP treatment, avoid using hair products that contain harsh chemicals or sulfates for a few days.

  • For at least 48 hours, refrain from strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot tubs.

  • It's advisable to avoid alcohol and caffeine for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment, as these can increase inflammation.
